TEAGASC, which has been developing a comprehensive apprenticeship programme, is rolling out the system in January 2020 and seeks to make all those in the equine breeding sector aware of its Stud Farm Assistant Manager apprenticeship.

Designed by industry-led groups, apprenticeships offer the chance for successful applicants to learn on the job and it’s a sector of education that the Irish government is keen to grow.

“The workforce in the equine industry, are highly skilled people who have learned their skilled trade through trial and error whilst honing in on their horsemanship skills. Why not utilise all this wisdom to train the next generation and attain a Level 7 Degree?” This Apprenticeship is an ideal way to have a skilled based degree for the equine sector allowing learners to earn as they learn and receive a recognised qualification from a “hands-on approach”. We are currently nearing the submission of the validation application with the aim to take in applicants for January 2020,” explained Teagasc’s Crea English.

A consortium of 12 stakeholders from the equine industry was formed to develop the Level 7 Stud Farm Assistant Manager Apprenticeship in 2017. There are 20 places per intake and applicants apply through the Apprenticeship Council and Teagasc. Apprentices must find employment with one of the registered host stud farms.

Anyone with a pass in the Leaving Certificate or who holds a Major QQI level 5 or higher in an equestrian field or has two years relevant work experience can apply.
