THE senior Irish show jumping team have been nominated for the RTÉ Sport Team of the Year for 2019.

Their nomination comes off the back of winning the FEI Nations Cup Final in Barcelona, qualifying a show jumping team for the Olympic Games. The team in Barcelona consisted of Cian O’Connor, Paul O’Shea, Darragh Kenny, Peter Moloney and Shane Sweetnam, managed by Rodrigo Pessoa, who departed the role at the beginning of December.

The Irish show jumping team won the award in 2017 after claiming team gold at the FEI European Championships in Gothenburg.

They are up against the five in-a-row All-Ireland winning Dublin GAA team, the Tipperary hurling team, Ireland’s women’s hockey team and ‘Team Tiger Roll’, consisting of trainer Gordon Elliott, jockey Davy Russell and owner Gigginstown House Stud, among others.

The RTÉ Sport Awards 2019 are live on RTÉ One tonight (Saturday) at 9.20pm. The Irish show jumping team will be represented by Gerry Mullins, Ronan Murphy, CEO of Horse Sport Ireland, and HSI chair Joe Reynolds.

Cathal Daniels was longlisted for the Sportsperson of the Year award and will also be in attendance, alongside eventing high performance manager Sally Corscadden.
