Murchu pass away

RODRIGO Pessoa’s leading show jumper and sire Baloubet de Rouet passed away last week, aged 28. The stallion won an individual gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, as well as the famous three in-a-row in the World Cup Final (1998-2000).

Sadly,Michael G. Duffy’s Grand Prix horse Murchu (Last News x Rakish Paddy) has also passed away, due to colic. The 13-year-old grey gelding was ridden by Duffy in all of his FEI starts and carried the Mayo rider to his first senior Nations Cup appearance and Grand Prix win.

Rankin fourth in Gothenburg

YOUNG rider Jenny Rankin placed fourth in Thursday’s first round of the Under 25 European Show Jumping Championships in Gothenburg, riding Deirdre Bourns’ Benny’s Legacy to a double clear round in the two-phase. Richard Howley, picked up six faults with Chinook.

The 1.50m final takes place on Sunday morning.

Teagasc trip

TEAGASC is reminding people that deposits for the tour to Germany must be returned to Group Travel International by the end of August (which is next week).

Final payments are due mid-September.

The five-day trip is an educational tour of breeding farms and/or operations producing show jumpers.

Credit due

THE winner of the Performance Irish Draught Championship Gortfree Lakeside Lad was broken in by Fintan McGrath of Ballyjennings Stables, Ballinrobe, Co Mayo and not as stated last week.

Fintan also broke in his winning sire Gortfree Hero.
