Breen wins at Hickstead

TIPPERARY’s Shane Breen won Friday’s Bunn Leisure Derby Trial on home soil at The All England Jumping Course in Hickstead. Riding Team Z7’s 12-year-old stallion Can Ya Makan, Breen was the fastest of five combinations in the jump-off to win €8,000. The main event, the Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby, takes place on Sunday at 2.45pm.

Waterford’s Paddy O’Donnell was also in the winner’s enclosure at the Sussex venue when he landed victory in Thursday’s Speed Derby qualifier aboard Declan McGivern’s 16-year-old Irish Sport Horse mare Hey There Delilah.

European squads announced

HORSE Sport Ireland this week announced the Gain Equine Nutrition-sponsored junior and young rider eventing and show jumping squads for the European Championships.

The eventing young rider squad is: Nessa Briody (Tom Boy), Eva Melly (Annaghmore Ardeo Beach), Christine O’Donnell (Blessington Prince Royal), Toni Quail (Ringfort Rua) and Stephanie Stammschroer (Master Swatch).

The junior squad is: Anna Kelly (Something Special VI), Romy McCarthy (Miracle), Robyn McCluskey (Rum Jumbie), Lucy McIlroy (Major Black) and Katie Riley (Versace Biscuit).

The young rider show jumping Susan Fitzpatrick (Fellow Castlefield), Chris Megahey (Viking D’Eole), Michael Pender (Casanova Van Overis Z), Lucinda Roche (WCE Falco) and Jonathon Smyth (Mulvin Lui).

The junior show jumping squad is: Harry Allen (Dis Moi Tout De Clairbois), Kate Derwin (AHG Whiterock Cruise Down), Jason Foley (Castlefield Vegas), Cian Harrison (Tabby) and Jack Ryan (Cavalier Teaca).

The Children on horses show jumping squad was named as: Sarah Fitzgerald (Master Holiday), Ciaran Foley (Ballylynch Wizard), Isobel Hughes Kennedy (ESI Carvalho), Lucy Morton (Delton 3) and Rhys Williams (CES Cruson).

Plusvital sponsorship

IRISH equine science company Plusvital has just announced its sponsorship of the CIC1* class at this year’s Kilguilkey House International Horse Trials.

Kilguilkey House International Horse Trials takes place over three days, starting on Friday, June 29th.
