FOLLOWING a jump of 20 places in July, 21-year-old event rider Cathal Daniels has risen another six places in the latest Longines World Rankings to 17th place.

The Kildare-based Galway native has experienced an incredible run of form of late, including a three-star win at the Sema Lease Camphire International Horse Trials last weekend with Sammy Davis Junior, as well as a runner-up place in the CIC2* with LEB Lias Jewel.

Daniels has been selected for the upcoming World Equestrian Games aboard Margaret Kinsella’s Rioghan Rua. His WEG-bound teammate Sam Watson is currently out of action after breaking his collarbone in a fall from Tullabeg Flamenco at Ballindenisk last month and that short break sees him drop 13 places to 30th.

Sarah Ennis has risen two places to 57th and Padraig McCarthy, who won the short format three-star at Camphire with his championships horse Mr Chunky, is up 18 places to 68th. Britain’s Oliver Townend remains out in front with 110 points to spare over compatriots Rosalind Canter (2nd) and Gemma Tattersall (3rd).

In the jumping rankings, there is a new top-ranked Irish rider as Denis Lynch has risen five places to 23rd, just one ahead of Bertram Allen, who is up three to 24th.

Shane Sweetnam is down one place to 27th, while Darragh Kenny has made a huge jump of 15 places to 29th place thanks to that brilliant fourth-place finish in the €1 million Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen in July.

Daniel Coyle is up two places to 30th and Shane Breen one place to 38th, bringing it to a total of six Irish show jumpers in the top 50. The Netherlands’ Harrie Smolders remains at number one for another month, as does Sweden’s Peder Fredricson in second place. Canada’s Eric Lamaze has moved up one place to third.
