THE 97th annual Connemara Pony Show has been cancelled for the first in its history due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Due to take place in Clifden from August 19th to 22nd, the Connemara Pony Breeders’ Society announced the cancellation on Tuesday evening, in what is a huge blow to the local economy in the Co Galway area.

“Since the coronavirus outbreak last January, the Society has continuously monitored the situation and taken guidance from the Irish Government and the Health Service Executive. The health and safety of all those who gather in Clifden for the pony show have been the Society’s priority in reaching this decision. This includes all visitors from Ireland and overseas, competitors, sponsors, volunteers, staff, members and not least the community of Clifden,” the statement said.

Kilguilkey cancelled

Kilguilkey International Horse Trials is another casualty on the eventing calendar, becoming the third home international of the season to be called off. The Co Cork event was due to take place from July 1-5th at Danny and Michelle Dulohery’s Kilguilkey House.

Internationally, Falsterbo Horse Show have cancelled their 100th anniversary show from July 4th-12th. All seven legs of the Division 1 Longines FEI Nations Cup series have now been cancelled due to the pandemic.
