IRISH Draught producer and Tara Riding Club chair Chris Carter will be the beneficiary of a fundraising show being held in Kells Equestrian, Co Meath on Sunday next, March 10th.

Carter, who works in sales with Eir, suffered severe injuries to his left leg when falling at the Bohermeen Horses yard he runs with partner Damien McCormack on January 6th. “We had two four-year-olds out and while Damien went back to the yard, I decided to give my one a couple of runs down over some poles we had on the ground.

“Having that famous last go, a bird flew out of the ditch and I went one way while the horse went the other. It was all very simple but, unfortunately, he caught me with a bad blow as I was falling which resulted in a broken fibula, tibula, ankle and a compound fracture to my foot. I spent about six weeks in hospital between Drogheda, Tallaght, Beaumont and back to Tallaght Hospital.

“Although it was looking bad at one stage, I got to keep my foot but I’m going to need extensive physio, perhaps another operation and I could be the guts of a year out of work. Happily, we live in a bungalow which has wheelchair access. It’s only when something like this happens that you realise how good your friends are as everyone has offered us help.”

According to Zoe Grogan, one of the show organisers, Carter deserves this assistance. “Chris is always the first person to put himself forward to help others in their time of need so Marie Helene Finnegan and some of his other friends decided to get together and put on this show for him. It will be a working hunter-type track with classes from lead rein up to a metre. There will also be a raffle on the day and we have been inundated with fantastic prizes.”
