A REPEAT of her sensational London Paralympics record, when she won three medals, wasn’t to be for Wicklow rider Helen Kearney in Rio.

Kearney (26) finished 20th in Monday’s opening Grade 1a dressage qualifier, although she and her Hanoverian 12-year-old Rock And Roll 2 produced an improved result (12th) out of 25 starters in Thursday individual championship.

“I finished the 1a Team Test on 68.00% and in 20th, I am very disappointed with the end result because I felt the test went better than the marks reflect,” commented Kearney.

Topping both days was individual gold medallist Sophie Christiansen, another British rider to complete a London-Rio gold double, and favourite to add another medal in the Freestyle with her Danish-bred mare Athene Lindebjerg.

The top eight riders from both days progressed to yesterday afternoon’s Freestyle championship.
