IRISH show jumpers made their presence felt at the two-star show in Kronenberg last week.
Sligo’s Richard Howley, fresh from winning the Uber 25 division at the European Show Jumping Championships in Gothenburg at the end of last month, continued his good form when winning Friday’s 1.40m two-phase competition.
Riding the 10-year-old Selle Français stallion Tango du Valdecie (Helios De La Cour II x Brandy De La Cour), Howley was the fastest of the double clear rounds in 30.82 seconds. A relatively new mount to Howley, the combination were over a second faster than their closest rival, Italy’s Francesca Capponi and Magical JW (0/0 31.71). Ireland’s Harry Marshall and Barcelona finished down the line in seventh place when clear in 33.86.
Later in the day, Howley returned to take another win in the 1.35m class when he partnered HK Horses’ Irish Sport Horse LSS Barbados (Balou du Rouet x Errigal Flight) to a clear in 67.22, narrowly beating Belgium’s Hans Van Laer in second place.
That combination finished third in Thursday’s 1.35m two-phase when clear in 33.11, where Hans Van Laer won with Kentucky Van ‘T Laerhof in 31.02.
Howley’s luck ran through until Sunday when he finished third in the 1.45m two-star Grand Prix. Riding Stal Hendrix’s eight-year-old mare Electra B (by Arezzo VDL), another relatively new mount to Howley’s fast growing string of top horses, he was one of 12 first-round clears and broke the beam clear in 42.20, against the clock to collect €3,750.
The Netherland’s Lisa Nooren and Dienellie emerged as the winners with the fastest clear, in 41.45 seconds.
MCGUANE WIN
Philip McGuane, who is based with sporthorse agent Barry O’Connor in Malahide and recently set up a winter base in Europe, won Saturday’s 1.35m Table A with Conor Swail’s E-Lady.
The eight-year-old mare by Zidane, who is a new ride to McGuane and was previously campaigned lightly by Swail, beat 57 starters to post the winning time of 60.03 seconds.
In the 1.40m medium tour, McGuane was best of the Irish when finishing in fifth place with Barry O’Connor and Beat Mandli’s Corland-sired eight-year-old Entertainer V, clear in 60.08. Winner of the class was Dutch rider Gabriel Coumans and Flow (0/55.67).
Offaly’s Darragh Kenny was also in the ribbons when he took a runner-up placing in the 1.45m Table A, crossing the line aboard Vlovk Show Stable’s Chakito in 30.68. Kenny was fractions behind the winner Soren Pedersen and Tailormade Chaloubet (0/0 30.60).
Howley was just out of the top six with Electra B when their time of 31.71 saw them slot into seventh.
