WEXFORD brothers Bertram and Harry Allen were in good form at the two-star show in Lier, Belgium, picking up a number of placings and one win apiece.

Sixteen-year-old Harry was first off the mark on Thursday when placing fourth in the two-star 1.30m with EH Quick Nina (Quidam’s Rubin x Camiros). With the 10-year-old mare, who was previously ridden by Harrie Smolders and older brother Bertram, he posted a clear round in 60.42 seconds.

The combination went three places better on Saturday when claiming victory in the 1.30m with a speedy clear round in 42.11 seconds.

Bertram got his first good placing on Thursday when just beaten into second by Frenchman Robinson Maupiler and Patchouli De Muze Z in the one-star seven-year-old class. Riding Ballywalter Farm’s Calafrieda (Canto 16 x Lavall 5), he crossed the line in 29.01.

Winner of one of the Connolly’s Red Mills seven and eight-year-old classes at the Dublin Horse Show last month, the pair went one better on Saturday when taking the top spot with a clear jump-off round in 32.15. Belgium’s Gilles Thomas was second, ahead of Maupiler in third.

Bertram added to his tally on the final day of the show when he finished second in the 1.35m two-phase class with GK Casper (Canto x Quantum). The nine-year-old gelding, who was purchased from Enda Carroll’s Ashford Farm as a seven-year-old, was just a second behind the winner, Britain’s Chloe Winchester and Sportsfield Our Clare (27.38), when crossing the line in 27.37.

In the 1.50m Grand Prix, Bertram finished in eighth place with the nine-year-old Berlin-sired stallion Dino W. One of 16 through to the jump-off, Allen picked up four faults in a time of 39.14 seconds, and despite posting the fastest time of the entire class, had to settle for a place down the line.

Belgium’s Patrick Spits won with Jacobien Dwerse Hagen with the best double clear in 39.64, ahead of Jos Verlooy and Japatero Vdm.

Earlier in the week, Dino W finished third in a 1.45m with a lovely clear round.

In the one-star 1.25m, Conor Drain was best of the Irish when he took fifth place with Audi’s Faults Free when clear in 31.02. On the final day, Drain took fourth place in the 1.30m one-star Grand Prix with Audi’s Faults Free when clear in 33.54.

The class was won by the European silver medallist, Dutchman Harrie Smolders and Arjo.
