CO Down’s Dermott Lennon landed two five-star wins at CSIO Gijon, Spain, last weekend.

Lennon kicked off with victory in Wednesday’s 1.40m with Victoria Loane’s Irish Sport Horse gelding Gelvins Touch (Touchdown x Diamond Lad). The 11-year-old grey, who was bred by Joe McCann, set the fastest time by almost two seconds in 66.75 to collect €2,500.

Louth’s Mark McAuley slotted into sixth place in the class with Vivaldi Du Theil, just ahead of Anthony Condon and Zira VH Kapelhof Z in seventh. Australia’s Roam Willis and Shark took the runner-up position in a time of 68.26.

Gelvins Touch also picked up another top placing in Sunday’s two-phase when finishing third in 36.04 behind Portugal’s Luis Sabino Gonçalves and Spain’s Paola Amilibia.

Lennon’s second win came in Thursday’s 1.50m winning round aboard Rebecca McGoldrick’s Fleur IV (Chatman x Darco). The quickest clear of the day resulted in a nice prize fund of €8,100. Dutchman Eric Van Der Vleuten took the runner-up placing.

Tipperary’s Shane Breen was seventh with his relatively new mount Hallowberry Cruz (Cruising x Clover Hill). The Caroline Byrne-owned 11-year-old Traditional Irish Sport Horse was formerly campaigned in Ireland by Alexander Butler.

Irish horses were well represented in the line-up as USA’s Reed Kessler slotted into fifth with Cos I Can (Olympic Lux x Harlequin de Carel).

The John Griffen-bred 14-year-old represented Ireland on many occasion with Shane Breen in the saddle.

Breen picked up two more placings with Hallowberry Crus – fifth in Friday’s 1.45m and Saturday’s 1.50m.

Mayo’s Cameron Hanley picked up yet another win with the exceptionally consistent Arany de Kergane (Nervoso x L’arc De Triomphe).

Since March, this combination have won 13 young horse classes and added to that in Friday’s 1.35m young horse class in Gijon. They also finished second the previous day.
