High Kingdom

THE Irish Sport Horse High Kingdom, bred by William Micklem in Co Wicklow, is to contest the four-star Rolex Kentucky event (April 23rd-26th) with British rider Zara Phillips. Meanwhile, Andrew Nicholson has withdrawn his Avebury from Badminton (May 7th-11th) due to a bone chip which put him out of work for two weeks in the build-up to the four-star challenge.

Grassland tips

TODAY’S paper includes an eight-page special feature on grassland management and spring cleaning (pages A43-50). There is advice on improving grass growth, drainage, hay, soil fertility and weed management.

Equestrathon?

THE FEI is undertaking a review of eventing and proposing an overhaul of the sport. Among the suggestions is that the sport be re-named ‘equestrathon’ and that the team and individual competitions at the Olympics and FEI Championships be run concurrently, with riders only being permitted to participate inone of these.

The proposed changes will be presented at the FEI Sports Forum in Switzerland on April 27th. On page A58, Sarah Ennis reacts to the proposals and next week’s paper will take an in-depth look at what’s on the cards.
