Helmets debate

THE debate on the revised standards of riding helmets continued at EU level following representations from Irish MEP Mairead McGuinness.

McGuinness wrote to the relevant member of the European Commission, Elzbieta Bienkowska, in October on the standardisation of riding helmets. In a reply this week, Bienkowska maintained the Commission is fully committed to the protection of safety of consumers and ensuring that products placed on the market are safe.

However, Irish consumer representative, Peter Downes of Russellstown Stud, Mullingar, highlighted that the PPE Council Directive requires the “highest level of protection possible”, taking issue with the “adequate level of safety’’ stated in Bienkowska’s reply.
