THEY say one swallow does not make a summer but of course, it’s the sighting of that first swallow that signals the return of summer and all that it brings.

This week came the inevitable announcement of the cancellation of Dublin Horse Show for the second successive year due to the global pandemic. However, holding firm to its steadfast commitment to the Irish equestrian industry, the RDS Championships were duly announced (August 18th-22nd).

While no replacement for Ireland’s five-star international show - which will return bigger than ever in 2022 we are assured - it’s great to see five individual days of equestrian action scheduled for August at Ballsbridge. It enables breeders, riders, owners and producers a chance to get their stock out and seen and is something to aim for.

Mullingar International Show

The Fagan family were inundated with support as they endeavour to host their flagship Mullingar International CSI2* over the extended dates of the June bank holiday (June 3rd to 7th). Vowing not to drop standards or cut prize money, it’s a huge undertaking at the best of times but is set to make a truly even greater impact this year.

Hats off to all involved at Ballsbridge and Mullingar this week - closed doors or no closed doors - it’s up to our industry now to make the best of every chance this summer brings.
