Wexford teenager Bertram Allen finished fifth in last Sunday’s five-star Grand Prix at’s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands after a gruelling contest in which some of the world’s top riders failed to qualify for the jump-off.

With only five combinations going through to the final round from a starting field of 38, Allen (18) produced a foot-perfect opening performance with Ballywalter Farms’s grey mare Molly Malone V. However, in the jump-off, Allen faulted twice to finish fifth overall with prize money of €24,500.

France’s Kevin Staut claimed the €87,500 first prize on his consistent mare Silvana HDC, who delivered one of just three double clear rounds to clinch victory in the high-profile competition.

KURTEN WIN

Earlier at the Dutch venue, Co Antrim’s Jessica Kurten won the Accumulator competition aboard VDL Stud’s chestut stallion Arezzo VDL while Tipperary’s Denis Lynch finishing sixth with Gestüt Lewitz’s mare Coulisa.
