SHANE Goggins and the Darco stallion UFO scored their second win of this season’s Sunshine Windows & Doors Connaught Grand Prix league, this time at Ard Chuain EC in Co Sligo.
Fourteen of the 39 starters made it into the jump-off, where Goggins made full use of his draw as last to jump against the clock, posting the winning time of 46.08 seconds to add to the pair’s recent win in the same series at Galway County Show.
Peter Smyth was first go in the second round with Corrib House and posted the fastest time of the class (44.18) but one fence down cost them victory at the finish.
Tim McDonagh riding Beaute Van Herikhave posted the first double clear round but were quickly overtaken by Gabriel Slattery and Belfields Captain who jumped clear in 52.26.
Shane Goggins was double-handed in the jump-off and briefly held the lead with Greenfort Newmarket K when clear in 52.07, while Mark Duffy and Puesta Del Sol also managed to keep the fences standing although their time of 55.64 didn’t challenge the leaders.
SHORT TRIP
Mayo’s Michael G Duffy, who was making a short trip home from his base in Europe, stormed into the lead with Ciao Bella (46.20), before Kevin Mealif and Castleforbes Coleen, who had won the previous round at Tubberbride, shaved 0.09 of a second off Duffy’s target to race into the lead in 46.11.
Last man in, Shane Goggins, and the 14-year-old UFO galloped to the last and crossed the line clear in 46.08 seconds to take the winner’s prize, pushing Kevin Mealif into second place with Michael G Duffy finishing in third.
