TIPPERARY’s Denis Lynch beat off stiff competition at the five-star Gothenburg show in Sweden to land a win in a 1.50m jump-off.

Riding Thomas Straumann’s bay gelding Abbervail van het Dingeshof, Lynch picked up valuable world ranking points as well as almost €9,000 in prize money.

The 38-year-old rode Abbervail Van Het Dingeshof through a faultless first round, qualifying for the jump-off with 16 other international combinations, and then showed an unbeatable turn of speed in the second round to claim first place.

Lynch’s nearest challenger was talented Netherlands rider Maikel van der Vleuten with VDL Groep Arera C, but he ended up almost two seconds adrift of the time set by the Irishman. Third place went to Sweden’s Peder Fredricson with H & M Flip’s Little Sparrow.

Meanwhile Cork’s Billy Twomey and Tinka’s Serenade were fifth in a strong 1.55m jump-off (0/4 36.07) where victory went to Fredricson and H & M’s All In (0/0 34.13).
