QATAR claimed the top spot in the team show jumping competition at the 2014 Asian Games this week after a faultless performance saw the team finish on a zero score.
Saudi Arabia, who shared the lead with Qatar until the halfway stage, had to settle for second place and a silver team medal, while Japan slotted into the bronze medal position.
A total of 20 combinations took part in the competitions individual decider with Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Al Sharbatly steering his 11-year-old bay into the top spot after two separate jump-offs. Japan took both silver and bronze with Satoshi Hirao and Taizo Sugitani respectively.
The 17th annual Asian Games took place at Incheon in the Republic of South Korea, where the host nation dominated the equestrian medal podium by winning gold in both dressage and eventing.
Ten countries fielded dressage competitors but an impressive performance from each of the host nation’s team members saw the Republic of South Korea secured its fifth consecutive team gold medal. Japan took team silver, ahead of Chinese Taipei in the bronze medal position.
In the individual competition, South Korea’s Dongsson Kim and his 3-year-old chesnut gelding Finally claimed gold, while his compatriot Hwang Young-shik settled for silver. Indonesia’s Larasati Iris Rischka Gadingtook bronze.
Seven nations lined out for the eventing phase and the South Korean team proved unstoppable from the outset with Japan finishing second and Hong Kong in third.
South Korea’s team anchor Sangwuk Song performance on board FRH Fantasia proved enough to lay claim to the individual title. Individual silver went to China’s Alex Hua Tian, the British-based rider, while Korea’s Sire Bang finished a very close third to take bronze.
