WHILE his older brother Eoin was busy winning a class in Italy last weekend, 16-year-old Conor McMahon claimed an international win of his own in the two-star Grand Prix at the Green Glens arena in Millstreet last Saturday.

The Connolly’s Red Mills-sponsored competition brought the 2016 Welcome Tour to a close with record entries across the board.

The jumping action was moved indoors due to heavy rain at the Co Cork venue with 25 starters lining out in the feature class which carried a prize fund of €25,000. Seven of those managed to make it into the jump-off, where Conor McMahon guided Kiwi Ludo to the fastest of three double clear rounds to take the winner’s prize.

Owned by Cian O’Connor’s Ronocco Jump Ltd, the 14-year-old gelding Kiwi Ludo was briefly campaigned by John Floody in 2015.

McMahon’s winning margin was incredibly tight, with Jordan Coyle finishing just three hundredths of a second slower with the nine-year-old Mr Blue gelding, Colour Blue, to take runner-up spot.

The only remaining double clear round came from Damien Griffin with Tabby who slotted into third, just over a second behind the leading pair.

Junior rider Jessica Kuehnle, who has just returned from a spell at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Florida, finished fourth with Benny’s Legacy.

They managed to keep all the poles standing in both rounds and added just a time fault second time out.

Madeline Allen riding Daroento VDL lowered a single rail against the clock to finish fifth, just ahead of Edward Butler and Cornets Son in sixth. Robert Harrison was the only other rider to make it into the jump-off and ended up in seventh place with Ard Leaderman.
