SLIGO’S Richard Howley continued his good run of recent form last weekend when winning a two-star 1.45 in Canteleu, France, last Saturday.
Howley partnered Arlo De Blondel to a super fast clear in the Table A speed class to break the beams in in 62.13 seconds and finish over two seconds ahead of French runner-up Francois Xavier Boudant with Brazyl Du Mezel, who clocked 64.55 seconds. Howley and the 10-year-old gelding, who is owned by the rider, HK Horses and Sarah Borthwick, earned €6,350.
The combination were pipped to the post in Sunday’s two-star Grand Prix when finishing runner-up behind Frenchman Olivier Gullion. Eleven of the 79 starters made it through to the jump-off, where seven produced a second clear round.
Howley’s time of 36.31 was just over a second slower than Gullion to earn another €5,000. France’s Max Thirouin completed the podium in third place aboard Utopie Villelongue (0/0 36.45).
Earlier in the week, British-based Howley claimed victory in the one-star 1.30m Table A. Riding the eight-year-old mare Hobelia, who is owned by Sara McCloskey, delivered the fastest of 32 clear rounds in the huge class of 117 starters, crossing the timers in 59.81 seconds. He was just fractions ahead of French rider Alexis Deroubaix and Corto Danfer, who followed closely behind in 60.01.
