KILDARE’s Mikey Pender won three classes at the three-star show in Vilamoura, Portugal, while Co Down’s Dermott Lennon was also in the winners’ enclosure.

Pender’s first victory came in Thursday’s 1.45m Table A when he guided Marion Hughes’ HHS Burnchurch to the top spot in a time of 60.95 seconds to earn €6,250. Britain’s Laura Renwick took second place, ahead of Italy’s Roberto Turchetto.

Pender’s second victory came in Friday’s 1.50m two-phase class. Riding the 11-year-old gelding Casanova van Overis Z, who is owned by Studfarm Overis and Hughes Bravo, Pender was the fatest of 13 double clear rounds in a time of 31.43 seconds to earn another €6,250.

His good form continued for the rest of the day when he landed his second win of the day, and third of the week, in the 1.40m Table A. Pender guided the eight-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding HHS Fortune (Catoki x Ard VDL Douglas) to a clear round in 57.28 seconds, in a huge class of 88 starters and 26 clear rounds. That combination were third a day earlier in a 1.40m.

Saturday saw Pender take the runner-up position in the three-star 1.35m with the eight-year-old Miguel Bravo-bred Irish Sport Horse HHS Toronto (Cavalier Royale x Don Juan de la Bouverie).

Lennon’s victory came in Sunday’s 1.45 Table A, when he guided Rebecca McGoldrick’s 11-year-old gelding Duco to victory in a time of 56.80 seconds, earning €1,000. Of the 20 other combinations who produced clear rounds, Portugal’s Luis Sabino Gonçalves came closest to Lennon’s time, ahead of Renwick in third.

Waterford’s Anthony Condon was best of the Irish in the 1.50m Grand Prix. He picked up four faults in the opening round to finish 10th with Lisa and Pat Hales’ 13-year-old stallion SFS Aristio. Victory went the way of Frenchman Guillaume Foutrier in the five horse jump-off.
