OFFALY’s Darragh Kenny won two one-star classes in Oliva, Spain, last weekend before finishing runner-up in the two-star 1.45m Grand Prix.
Riding the 12-year-old gelding Belo Horizonte who just recently joined Oakland Stables from American Ashlee Bond, Kenny was among 14 clear rounds in the first round on Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Ten managed to produce another fault-free round against the clock, and Kenny’s time of 34.29 was just fractions slower than Germany’s Richard Vogel and Diego, a horse formally ridden by Irish riders Andrew Bourns and Cian O’Connor, who won at five-star level with the grey gelding. Kenny earned €6,000 for second place.
In Saturday’s one-star Grand Prix, he took the top spot with the nine-year-old mare Harissa Z. Strangely, there were no double clear rounds in the class, despite six making it through to the jump-off where Kenny won with the fastest four faults against the clock in 33.94 seconds. Germany’s David Will finished runner-up with Concordia 49 (0/4 36.06).
Kenny also won Thursday’s seven-year-old 1.35m class with the French-bred Dakota de l’Ardrais. In fourth place was the Irish Sport Horse Kindsborough Kasper (Kannan x Revenge W), bred by Cliodhna Carrol and ridden by Britain’s Louise Saywell.
