MIKEY Pender returned from his tour in the UAE last week but continued his winning streak at the three-star show in Portugal in Thursday’s 1.45m Longines ranking class.

The Kildare native guided Marion Hughes’ home-bred Irish Sport Horse gelding HHS Burnchurch (Heritage Fortunus x Cavalier Royale) to victory in the 1.45m two-phase class to earn €6,350. The pair were the quickest of 11 double clear rounds, from 40 starters, in a time of 34.62 seconds. Dermott Lennon scored third place with MJM Holdings Ltd’s 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse MJM Pursuit (N-Aldato x Limmerick), bred by Cyril Ferguson, when clear in 34.88 seconds, while the Irish pair were split by Britain’s Guy Williams in second with Rouge de Ravel (0/0 34.72).

Pender placed fifth in Saturday’s 1.40m jump-off class aboard Bravo Hughes Ltd’s eight-year-old mare HHS Javas Gucci (Luidam x Cruising) who was bred by Judy Murphy. The combination faulted once against the clock. Victory went to Portugal’s António Matos Almeida with Virtuose du Very (0/0 41.00).

Marion Hughes also scored a fifth place finish in Saturday’s 1.35m jump-off. She rode the nine-year-old mare Quialina D to a four-fault round in 39.33 seconds.
