LORCAN Gallagher dominated at Kentucky Summer Classic last week when winning and placing third in the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic Grand Prix.
He produced two of only four clears in the first round of the 53-starter class on Thursday evening. American veterans Todd Minikus and Alison Robitaille were the only other two clears but Gallagher produced the fastest time against the clock aboard the 10-year-old stallion Hunters Conlypso II.
Owned by the Decantos Group, Gallagher took over the ride on the stallion a year ago and they have produced a number of consistent results. His other podium place came aboard Charlie, a 10-year-old Chacco-Blue-sired gelding who is owned by Southern Arches and Patty Taylor.
Those placings leave Gallagher comfortable at the top of the leaderboard in the Hagyard Challenge Series with 550 points, ahead of fellow Irishman Darragh Kenny on 470 points. Kenny racked up those points before leaving to compete on the European circuit. A cash prize of $50,000 will be awarded to the winning athlete after the seven Grand Prix classes.
“With the bonus at the end, it’s great to be rewarded for your consistency. I thought my good friend Darragh Kenny is leading and I don’t want him to beat me. I am not going to be here for the next one, but I’ll be back fighting for the two after that,” Gallagher said afterwards.
