IRISH riders picked up a number of good results at the five-star World Cup show in Lyon, France, last weekend.

The best of those came in Sunday’s 1.50m when Sligo’s Richard Howley galloped to victory with HK Horses and Sarah Borthwick’s Chinook.

Some 16 of the starting 39 managed to produce a clear round in the one-round speed, but Howley’s time of 59.33 was good enough for him to take home the top prize of €6,250.

Irish show jumpers took three of the top 10 places in Friday’s 1.60m Grand Prix class. Louth’s Mark McAuley was best of the Irish, when taking a fourth-place finish and collecting €10,000 for his efforts.

It was a strong field and 20 combinations booked their place in the jump-off after the first round of jumping. McAuley partnered Eva Lundin’s nine-year-old gelding Jasco vd Bisschop to a clear round in a time of 35.98.

Waterford’s Anthony Condon and SFS Aristio continued their good form of late when they clocked a clear in a time of 39.58 for seventh place. Offaly’s Darragh Kenny and Cassini Z proved that the time could be caught when breaking the beam in 34.93, but one fence on the floor meant they had to settle for ninth on this occasion.

Germany’s Daniel Deusser collected the winner’s prize of €25,000 when crossing the line clear in 34.60 seconds aboard Tobago Z.

Mark McAuley and Miebello were narrowly beaten in the second round of the Equita Masters on the Saturday night of the show, when slotting into the runner-up spot after delivering a clear round in a time of 39.56.

McAuley didn’t go home too disappointed however as he picked up €20,000 for his efforts. Britain’s Scott Brash and Hello Mr President took just over one second off McAuley’s time to take the top prize of €25,000.

Further down the line was Anthony Condon and Zira vh Kapelhof Z, who finished in eighth place with four faults in a time 43.98. McAuley’s other placing came Friday’s two-phase 1.50m.
