Shane Carey shares Danish Grand Prix victory

LIMERICK’s Shane Carey shared victory in the two-star Grand Prix of Herning, Denmark, last Sunday after a dead heat with Germany’s Philipp Schulze Topphoff.

Riding the Skorphults Hästar AB-owned 10-year-old Skorphults Baloutendro, Carey was among 16 clears in the first round of the 1.45m competition from 40 starters. Just 10 progressed to the jump-off, where Carey and Schulze Topphoff both broke the beam in 43.06 seconds to take €9,540 each.

Carey and Skorphults Baloutendro, who helped Ireland win the Nations Cup in Drammen earlier this year, were second in Friday’s 1.45m Grand Prix qualifier with a clear jump-off round in 34.89 seconds.

They picked up just over €5,000 when runner-up behind Sweden’s Rolf-Göran Bengtsson with Zuccero (0/0 34.81).Carey beat his wife, Denmark’s Linnea Ericsson-Carey into third place with Dingular LS La Silla (0/0 34.89).

Breen second in Vilamoura

TIPPERARY’s Trevor Breen was runner-up in the three-star 1.50m Grand Prix in Vilamoura, Portugal, last Sunday. Breen rode the nine-year-old gelding Highland President, who is owned and bred by his mother-in-law, Heather Black, to one of just two clear rounds in the three-horse jump-off to earn €10,200. His time of 37.71 seconds was almost two seconds slower than Italian winner Piergiorgio Bucci with Carpe Diem J&F Champblanc (0/0 35.92).
