WEXFORD’s Bertram Allen didn’t quite manage to win the four-star Grand Prix at the Stockholm Horse Show in Sweden for a fourth time in a row, but he did finish within the top five at the show which has been good to him through his young career.

After winning 12 months ago aboard Gin Chin van het Lindenhof, who won the four-star Grand Prix in Maastricht just two weeks ago, he rode GK Casper (Canto x Quantum) in Sunday’s renewal and was one of five riders to make it through to the tough jump-off, where no rider managed to clear the track.

Allen and the 10-year-old picked up eight faults in the timed round to finish in fifth place. Victory went to Brazil’s Marlon Zanotelli with Sirene de la Motte. The combination took their time against the clock and completed with one time fault in 55.88 seconds.

The next three in the line-up were all from the home nation. Petronella Andersson took the runner-up place aboard Eclatant with four faults in a time of 46.67, while Peder Fredricson guided Hansson WL to a four-fault round in the jump-off in 46.89 seconds to finish third.

Allen finished second in Sunday’s 1.45m Masters Special riding Christy Jnr, when victory went to Sweden’s Petronella Andersson.

The German-based Irishman won the young horse final at the four-star show with the talented seven-year-old Nabab De Reve-sired Guinness. The seven-year-old stallion has been in consistent form this season and finished as the runner-up the day before.
