WEXFORD’s Bertram Allen (22) was back indoors last weekend and he scored a fourth-place finish in Sunday’s lucrative five-star Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping at the Dutch Masters in s-Hertogenbosch, netting €80,000.
Riding the 12-year-old gelding Gin Chin van het Lindenhof, who is owned by Ballywalter Bloodstock, Allen was one of 13 combinations who made it into the second round and they briefly held the lead in the jump-off when posting a clear in 38.74.
Germany’s Marcus Ehning looked to have done enough to take victory when he posted a clear in 37.80 with Cornado NRW. However, he missed out on the top prize of €264,000 when, last to go, Belgium’s Niels Bruynseels crossed the line clear in 37.10 with Gancia de Muze.
Dutch favourite Harrie Smolders took third place on the podium with Emerald in a time of 37.89.
Bruynseels has now started his Grand Slam journey and speaking afterwards he said he will aim for the next leg in Aachen, Germany. “This has to be one of my biggest victories, I don’t even have the words to say how much it means to me.
“Aachen is certainly the next stop for me. The Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping is the biggest prize in our sport and I hope I can come to Germany in July and repeat what I have achieved here,” Bruynseels said.
