Broderick hat-trick: Enjoying a hat-trick in Arezzo, Italy, was Ireland’s Greg Broderick who was in flying form on Noel Cawley’s 10-year-old mare Rincarina.

Having already won on the opening day and again on Friday in Arezzo, Broderick and the Cruising mare beat off 38 international competitors to win Saturday’s two-phase competition by just over half a second, with Brazilian rider Victor Castro second Italian rider Frederico Ciriesi third.

Allen third in GP: Wexford’s Bertram Allen added valuable points to his Longines World Rider ranking when finishing third in Sunday’s Grand Prix at the Global Champions Tour, Lausanne, Switzerland.

Allen, who is currently Ireland’s highest-placed rider with a 32nd position in the world rankings, steered the chesnut stallion Romanov into the 12-strong second round, but at the finish was almost one-and-a-half seconds off the pace of Saudi Arabian winner Abdullah Al Sharbatly and his 13-year-old mare Andrea. Allen (19) took home €13,500 for his place, while Al Sharbatly collected the winner’s prize of just under €30,000.

Tipperary’s Denis Lynch was seventh in the five-star competition, also going clear with Querida 75.

Polo final: Polo Ireland put up a very game performance against England in the final of the European Polo Championships at Chantilly, France, last Sunday but were beaten six goals to three.

The Irish team of Sebastian Dawnay (captain), Richard Fagan, Max Hutchinson and Siobhan Herbst faced England after a thrilling series of games.

Hughes wins GP: Kilkenny’s Marion Hughes won the one-star Grand Prix in Barcelos, Portugal at the weekend with the Irish Sport Horse Heritage HHS Fortuna, and also placed fourth on another Irish Sport Horse, HHS Pinky.

Clark honoured: Jane Clark, owner of the top ranked grey Belgium Warmblood mare, Cella, the mount of Britain’s Ben Maher, was named Owner of the Year for 2013. Cella enjoyed a string of wins last year including wins in the London Global Champions Tour and the Warsteiner Grand Prix at Aachen CHIO as well as runner-up in the FEI European Championships, Herning, Denmark.

FEI President Princess Haya made the presentation to Clark along with Madeleine Winter-Schulze, representing the Jumping Owners Club, at the Stade d’Ornano during WEG.
