CONAN Wright dominated Sunday afternoon’s Power and Speed class, sponsored by the Farnham Arms Hotel, at the one-star Cavan International show.

Partnering Norman Allen’s 16-year-old stallion Cara Touche (Touchdown x Flagmount Diamond), Wright proved best of the 45-strong field to secure the win.

Jessica Burke and Clonguish Vivaro set the pace as the fourth to go. Clear in the power phase, the pair produced an impressive right-handed run from fences seven to eight. Tight turns and an ongoing pace throughout meant the duo broke the beam in a time of 27.30 to set the standard for the remaining 41.

Burke held onto her lead while the next nine horses took their turn, then Conan Wright and Cara Touche came in as 13th to go.

Fault-free over the first six fences which made up the power phase, Wright then turned his attention to the speed. A clever right-hand inside turn from fences six to seven, completed in just 10 strides, had the pair up on time.

Changing rein to a left-hand slice from fence eight to nine, the pair took just seven quick strides to complete the manoeuvre and stay ahead on the clock.

He was quick from fence nine to 11 and did the final line from fence 11 to 12 in seven strides to stop the clock at 26.59, the fastest clear of the day.

Darragh Ryan came closest to catching Wright. Riding Noel Cawley’s eight-year-old mare Glimmering (Loughehoe Guy x Cruising), Ryan managed to complete the track in a time of 26.84 to claim second place.

Ciaran Nallon and Ballyfair Deal also took all the inside turns and stopped the clock at 27.18 to take third place, ahead of Burke in fourth.

Alexander Butler and HS Copperhead Cruise made a good attempt and managed the same inside turns as Wright but were just slightly off the mark in 27.48 for eventual fifth place.

Sven Hadley, riding his own 13-year-old German-bred gelding Quanbell, also gave the track a good try and produced a clear over both phases recording a time of 27.54 to slot them into sixth place.
