IT was another busy weekend for Ireland’s up and coming horses as Barnadown played host to the second round of the ISH Studbook Showjumping Series last Sunday where finalists took to the main grass arena.
In the seven-year-old division, 22 went to post and of those, seven proceeded to the jump-off. First to go, James Hogg took a calculated approach with Intuitive to take the win, clear in 50.81 seconds. Hogg made up time in the turn backs, in particular from fence two to three and later to the third last oxer.
Owned and bred by Edgar Hogg, the gelding is by Beach Ball (ISH), out of the Andiamo Z-sired mare, Sandiamo. Hogg has bred others from the dam Sandiamo which include Always On My Mind (by Ard VDL Douglas), Knights Bridge (by Ars Vivendi) and others by Beach Ball and European Cruise.
Riding Tara M, Francis Connors also opted for the tight turns, but despite this, crossed the line in 52.07 for second place. Bred and owned by Suzanne Macken, the mare is by Luidam (KWPN) out of Lasina Ii (HOLST).
COMPETITIVE
Hannah Patterson knew what she needed to do as she took to the course with the Deirdre Bourns-owned Volt Star. Despite a good pace, a slightly longer turn back to the third last oxer cost her time, as she clocked 53.48 for eventual third. Bred by Bourns, the mare is by Lancelot (KWPN) out of Volitol (ISH) .
Anne Marie Fitzpatrick and HHS Fondue (ISH) also kept everything in place, albeit in a slower time of 56.06 for fourth. Bred by Marion Hughes and now owned by Harry and Barbara Fitzpatrick, HHS Fondue is a gelding by Heritage Fortunus (HANN) out of Cheryl Ch (ZVCH).
No stranger to success in these classes, Linda Moloney and Zilko proved out of luck when faulting at the first, but a fast time of 48.14 saw her take fifth place. Bred by Thomas O’Brien and owned by Tom Moloney, the mare is by Je T’Aime Flamenco (BWP) out of Zilke.
Jessica Burke and Castlelawn Captain Junior faulted at the second fence and crossing the line just over the 50-second mark meant a sixth place finish for the pair.
Bred by Elizabeth Gallagher and owned by Gabriel Slattery, the Captain Clover-sired stallion has a impressive record under Burke’s command.
His results include winning the six-year-old championship in Dublin, as well as the ISH Studbook Series League as a five and six-year-old. As a five-year-old, he finished runner-up in the consolation final at Lanaken.
He also travelled as part of the Irish squad to Lanaken in 2017.
FINALS
In the five-year-old final, six combinations from the 25 starters jumped double clear to split the win.
Those sharing the prize fund were Jessica Burke (Orestus Clover), Jason Higgins (Seeking Fortune), Cathal McMunn (Rossa Lough Derg), Maria Vozone (Cuffesgrange Corleone) and Sophie Richards (Luxie B).
In the six-year-olds, just four of the 25-strong startlist delivered double clears.
Those sharing the prize fund were Sophie Richards (Be The One), Derek McConnell (Longfield Quinlui), Jack Ryan (BBS McGregor) and Cathal McMunn (Lucidam).
