BERTRAM Allen added another win to his collection last Sunday, capturing the Prix Rio Moquette speed class at the five-star World Cup show at Lyon in France.

Allen and the 11-year-old chesnut gelding Quiet Easy 4, beat off a top class line-up to take the €7,500 winners prize, pushing Swedish star Rolf-Goran Bengtsson with the grey stallion Clarimo ASK into runner-up spot, while the world’s top-ranked show jumper, Britain’s Scott Brash, had to settle for third place with the chesnut gelding Hello Forever.

Allen was drawn eighth to jump in a 35-strong field and set a scorching target that couldn’t be matched, adding to a previous win for the same combination at the beginning of October at the Longines Masters in Los Angeles.

Allen was joined at the World Cup fixture by Tipperary-born Trevor Breen who finished in 10th place in last Friday’s 1.50 – 1.60m Longines Grand Prix. Breen and the exciting eight-year-old Armitage stallion Classic, went clear in the opening round before lowering one pole in the jump-off.

Last Sunday’s latest round of the FEI World Cup series at Lyon saw French rider Penelope Leprevost and Flora de Mariposa score their second win, following on from another victory in the series opener at Oslo. Just seven of the 40 starters found the key to Frank Rothenberger’s first-round track, with the 35-year-old Frenchwoman and her 10-year-old mare pushing Germany’s Christian Ahlmann and Taloubet Z into runner-up spot, while the previous weekend’s winners in Helsinki, Switzerland’s Romain Duguet and Quorida de Treho, had to settle for third place this time out.

Ireland’s Allen finished in 11th spot, picking up four faults in the opening round with Molly Malone V, while Breen and Classic finished with two fences down on their first World Cup outing.

Allen travels to Verona in Italy this weekend where he will be hoping to repeat the performance which saw him score his first ever World Cup triumph at this fixture 12 months ago. He is joined at the Italian venue by Mayo’s Cameron Hanley.
