THE final qualifying tickets for the young event horse classes at next month’s Dublin Horse Show were on offer at Rincoola on Tuesday when, apart from one heading north and one to Tipperary, they were dispersed around Leinster.
In Section A of the four-year-old class they were claimed by the Carol Gee-owned, Luca Bortolamei-ridden dun Irish Sport Horse gelding Fernhill Junior (Je t’Aime Flamenco - Catcher Babushka, by Ricardo Z) who finished third and the David Bourke and Mary Fenelon-owned ISH gelding Enniskerry Echo (Sligo Candy Boy - Enniskerry Encore, by Watermill Swatch) who placed fourth in the hands of Ellen Treacy.
Fethard’s Paul Donovan will be well-represented as an owner at Dublin, his latest qualifier being Tuesday’s Section B winner under Fraser Duffy, the ISH gelding Sportsfield Mister Cool (Coolkeeran - KND Mystique, by Dream Boy M) who was bred in Co Laois by Thomas Hutchinson.
Also qualifying were the second-placed Julie Radden-owned, Patrick Whelan-ridden ISH gelding Tomgar Valour (Imnotafraid Fortuna - Overton Whitby, by Lansdown) and Jodie Skelton’s ISH gelding Ballygriffin Merryman (Vivant van de Heffinck - Ballycapple Merry Breeze, by Lux Z) who finished third in the hands of Emma Skelton.
From either side of the Meath/Dublin border, Sarah Ennis and Jill Revill secured the tickets on offer in Section A of the five-year-old class on two home-breds. Ennis did so on Susanne Macken’s ISH mare Lady Sky M (Cinsey - Emily M, by Je t’Aime Flamenco), who finished second, while Revill booked her spot at Dublin with Michael Kelly’s fourth-placed ISH gelding Lislan Chacfly (Chacfly PS - Lislan Serene, by Harlequin du Carel).
Steven Smith, who won the five-year-old final last August, qualified in first place in Section B with Lucy McIlroy’s ISH gelding Captain Carnival (Colandro - Silken Carnival, by Mermus R). The bay was bred in Co Armagh by Helen and Philip Troughton. The second ticket went to the third-placed ISH gelding Brookfield Oscar (Lagans OBOS Quality - Catch Up, by Dock Leaf) who is ridden by Louise Codd for British owners John and Chloe Perry and Alison Swinburn.
Quite often a feature of this last qualifier, the third ticket was offered down the line to the seventh-placed ISH gelding Milchem Gemstone (Ganesh Hero Z - Milchem Saphire, by KMS Chicago) who is ridden by Jason Doerflinger for breeder Ralph Conroy and Eoghan McCabe.
In Section A of the Junior/Young Rider event horse class, the Dublin tickets went to Georgina Pettitt and her mother Marguerite’s traditional home-bred seven-year-old ISH mare BCL Belletastic (Killinick Bouncer - Ballycushlane Crest, by Cut The Mustard) who finished second and the third-placed combination of Ciara Dennigan and Padraic O’Neill’s seven-year-old ISH gelding Poynstown Junior (Castletown Captain Junior - Scardaune Las, by Orestus).
The final tickets of the 2025 season were claimed in Section B by the busy Ciara O’Connor on Emma Ryan’s second-placed gelding Clonfin Sidneigh (Sinatra (CP) - Cloontrask Convinced, by Young Convinced) and Zach Palmer with Karen Blakely’s seven-year-old ISH gelding Knocklucas Ascalon (Ascalon - Clondrinagh Inspector, by Tinaranas Inspector) who finished fourth.
