THIS writer was exhausted even thinking about Nancy Lyons Teehan’s schedule at last week’s British Show Pony Society’s summer championships.

Not delving any distance into the past, we’ve written about her successes at Mullingar, Clifden and Tattersalls Ireland recently and the winning streak continued in Grantham.

There, among other victories (and we’re not going into her placings), she won the Horse of the Year Show 153cm and the Mountain and Moorland Heritage 148cm and over working hunter pony on her grandmother Ann Lyons’s seven-year-old Connemara gelding Buachaill Bui (Templebready Fear Bui - Golden Bee, by Glaskopf Golden Siskin).

In the Desert Orchid section, Lyons Teehan topped the line-up in the 133cm on her mother Louise’s six-year-old palomino mare Dartans Seoda Ban and in the 143cm with Louise’s 10-year-old skewbald gelding Dartans Brandonwell Jack.

Keeping their mother on her feet, Nancy’s sister Robin was third in the Simply The Best nursery stakes on the 22-year-old grey gelding Tybroughney Cloud, who their brother Nicky George partnered into fourth in the nursery stakes.

Another rider to record multiple wins at the championship was Co Down’s Jocelyn Hutchinson who, on her mother Lorraine’s seven-year-old Connemara mare Cong Grey Star (Rogaire na Locha - Ardane Grey Star, by Rynn Richard) won the novice working hunter, going reserve champion, her Young Dragonara class and the 143cm Gold Cup dressage.

Add to that list Ellie Murphy who, on the 11-year-old Rotherwood Secret Agent gelding Stockham Secret Envoy, won the 133cm challenge working hunter, while she also recorded a win (in the 133cm Heritage working hunter) on Derryloughane Benny. She was on the Ireland squad who won the Heritage Team competition, as was her sister Lily with the 11-year-old Connemara mare Dunran Love In The Mist (I Love You Melody - Dunran Button Moon, by Monaghanstown Boy). Special mention must also be made of Ella Moran, who won the Challenge show hunter pony championship with the nine-year-old mare Tandridge Debutante (Tandridge Democrat - Rotherwood Senorita, by Strinesdale Matador) and Fionn Redmond, who won the Chinook Matador trophy in the Pretty Polly 128cm on Stracathro Golden Sorbet. Fionn also won the hobby horse supreme championship!

We can’t sign off without mentioning Casey-Lee Millar, Aoife Brennan who recorded numerous top three placings, Ada Purcell Logue, Enzo Rocca Houlihan, Camilla McNamara Kelly, Sophie Cusack, the Elliott siblings Logan and Amelia, Emily Marnane, Lucy Donnelly, Sophia Martin and Aoife Flynn, who brought home plenty of rosettes as well as great memories.

We should also refer to two winning ponies being produced in England for their Irish owners. The first of these is Sadhbh and Aoife’s O’Connor’s eight-year-old stallion Glencarrig Emperor (Glencarrig Knight - Glencarrig Princess, by Glencarrig Prince), who won his Connemara and New Forest class, then stood champion qualifying for the London International Horse Show in December. Amira Curran’s 13-year-old ISH mare CSF Chantilly Galway Girl (Arkan - Miss Gui Khan, by Guidam) won her 153cm show hunter class, while the owner was also placed on Shildons Royal Affair and the home-produced Caherpuca Chappy.
