LISA Doogan and her own 12-year-old mare Cove Park won the 1.35m at the Cavan three-day August show last Friday evening.
By O.B.O.S. Quality 004 out of Cove Hill (Cavalier Royale), Cove Park was bred by Thomas Hearne and has been partnered by Doogan for the past five years.
A total of 20 combinations lined out for the class; 11 produced a clear first round, while seven more had just a single fence down for four faults. Nine of the 11 in the decider managed to keep a clean sheet through the jump-off. Doogan proved fastest of these, despite being early in the order as third to go. The duo stopped the clock at 35.71 for the win.
Junior rider Simone Byrne, riding Paul Curtis’ mare Luggers Ally (Pacino x Moores Clover), bred by Roberta McClurg, took the runner-up spot in 36.37. Third went to young rider Lauren Murphy aboard David Cullen’s eight-year-old Belgian-bred Coco Du Rona Z (Corico Z x Darona Z) in 37.28.
Another eight-year-old, Catriona Fallon and her own home-bred Freddy Bear (Celtic Hero B Z x Deeply Dippy K), finished in fourth in 37.65. Mackenzie Healy rode McFadden Equine’s mare Contemporary Rock (Tolan R x Maximum Clearance), bred by Brian Clinghan, into fifth in 37.98, while Samantha Kirk completed the top six riding her own Olive Clarke-bred FSS Indigo (Indoctro x Pacino) in 38.21.
Emerald win
Friday’s 1.30m went to Shane McCloskey riding his own Marion Hughes-bred eight-year-old gelding HHS Emerald (Emerald Van’t Ruytershof x Acorado).
Some 24 of the 31 starters kept a clean sheet through the first round. Seventeen of these left all the poles in place in the jump-off, with McCloskey fastest of these in a time of 35.41.
John Floody came closest to catching them, when he and Brian Kieran’s home-bred HTS Redrock (HTS Blackrock x Aldatus Z) broke the beams in 35.50 for second place. The seven-year-old KMS Rocco (Zirocco Blue VDL x Campbell VDL), owned by Miley Dunning and bred by Olive Broderick, was ridden into third place by Joyce Veld in a time of 36.95.
Kennedy Brothers Sporthorses’ eight-year-old Lagans KBS Calvo Lad (Obos Quality 004 x Cavalier Royale), bred by Peter Rice and ridden by Paul McDermott, took fourth place in 36.99.
Fifth went to Hallie Crowe with her own seven-year-old Dutch-bred mare Nikita in 37.10. Another Dutch-bred seven-year-old, Sean Jordan’s Nikittaire Van’T Oosterzand, ridden by Sean Jordan, slotted into sixth in 40.67.
