IN addition to the championship classes, a variety of other competitions took place throughout last Sunday’s Connolly’s Red Mills/Association of Irish Riding Clubs national show jumping championships at Mullingar Equestrian.

Eight combinations contested the young horse class which, with one time penalty over the two rounds, Rathfarnham’s Kellie Adamson won on board her Irish Sport Horse mare Frenchys Unique Kiss.

The French Connection five-year-old, who has 39 Showjumping Ireland points to her credit, was bred by Thomas Moloney out of MSH Unique, a daughter of Zidane. If you look right back into the bay’s family you will come across the name of the top-class racemare Indian Skimmer.

Three Derbys were held in the International Grass Arena where there were only three entries and two starters in the RC110/RC120, but the other classes were better supported.

The winner of that highest-graded competition was Arderin’s Rachel Cosgrave on her Irish Sport Horse gelding Monarts Garrison Guy, a 19-year-old bay by Garrison Royal who she also competes under Show Jumping Ireland rules.

There were 13 starters in the RC100 Derby, two of whom recorded clear rounds.

These were Benbulben’s Emma O’Connor, who claimed the win in 120.41 with her traditionally-bred nine-year-old ISH gelding Acrefield Enzo (Ross Fear Bui – Dosley High Hopes, by On A High), and Mo Chara’s Liam Keogh who was narrowly beaten into second in 121.47 on board Tara Emerald.

With eight withdrawals, there were 12 starters in the RC90 Derby, none of whom managed to go clear. The only four-fault round was recorded by Thomastown & District’s Gillian Cody with her 14-year-old ISH gelding Lisbrien Boy, another by Crannagh Hero.

Two competitors picked up the maximum 65 points in the nine-runner RC80 Accumulator.

Riding her 16-year-old grey gelding Mullagh Jamie, Tynagh’s Gillian Kidd claimed the honours as, in 76.73, she was far closer to the optimum time than Rathangan chairman Derry Walker whose points-earning round on the multi-talented 18-year-old bay gelding If Ever A Rogue was in a speedy 59.59.

Galway West’s Alana O’Malley recorded an uncontested victory in the RC70 Accumulator on her six-year-old Connemara gelding Mochulla Dan (Danesfield Prince – Muchulla Rosealine, by Mochulla Dun).
