ELIZABETH Cooke, who was badly injured in a fall out hunting in early December and only received the all-clear to resume riding at the end of April, qualified for the 158cm working hunter pony class at Dublin at Sceilig last Wednesday week and for the older Connemara performance hunter class at Rincoola last Saturday.
In both instances, Cooke was on board Tawnagh Lad (Classiebawn Black Jack - Bruckless Hester, by Linsfort Boy), the 11-year-old Hugh Walsh-bred gelding with whom, as a member of the North Kilkenny Branch, she represented the Irish Pony Club and Ireland at the Junior home international tetrathlon in England last year.
On Saturday, Cooke and Tawnagh Lad, who also qualified last year, completed on a score of 244.5 marks in Section B, ahead of Roisin Lucey who, on 240, bagged the second golden ticket riding her own eight-year-old gelding Glencarrig Pat (Glencarrig Knight - Glencarrig Cara, by Glencarrig Patrick).
Jessica Murphy added to her list of rides at the Gallagher Dublin Horse Show when winning Section A on the Cathy Leggett-owned, Ronan Nee-bred Doonreaghan Oak (Newtown Moll’s Pride - Dusty Oak, by Abbeyfort).
Murphy amassed 237 marks on the 11-year-old grey gelding with Shauna Wilson, riding for her mother Bronagh, claiming the second ticket on offer when completing on 233 marks with the 12-year-old Patrick Hayes-bred mare Kildromin Maud (Carraig Éibhir - Bofeenaun Gemma, by Monaghanstown Fred).
Two seven-year-old bay geldings filled the top two placings in Section A of the five to seven-year-old qualifier.
Riding for her mother Bernadette, Ciara Lane topped the final leaderboard on a combined score of 232 marks with the Sean O’Malley-bred Shawnee Shadow (Bay Shadow - Kylesalia Maggie May, by Streamstown Mickey). Mary-Kate Duffy slotted into second on 230.5 marks with her father Brendan’s Ballylinn Bruce (Doonard Lady - Corclough Lily, by Castleside Carrig).
Jason Furlong did his bit for the male of the species by winning Section B on Seamus McCoy’s Corabbey Sawyer (Corabbey Sebastian - Lehid Dun, by Coral Prince). Bred by Rose Mary Fitzgerald, the six-year-old completed on a score of 237.5. Here, Linnea Larkin filled the runner-up spot on 232 to claim the second ticket with Marc O’Regan’s seven-year-old grey mare Knockroosk Coconut (Lough Melvin Gorteen - Carp Dun, by Coral Prince).
In these classes, and the performance Irish Draught qualifiers, Kay Nolan and Derval Diamond judged the ridden phase, Trish Collins took on that duty for the jumping phase, while Betts Coleman assessed all forward for rhythm and fluency.
