SIXTH year students at St Brigid’s School, Killarney, have raised funds in memory of their friend Izzy O’Callaghan, with donations going to Killarney First Responders and Tiggy’s Trust.
The fundraising effort was led by Molly Collins and Molly Reidy who, together with their classmates, chose the fundraiser as a way of remembering Izzy, who continues to be deeply missed by her friends, teachers and the wider school community. The girls wanted to support causes they felt reflected Izzy’s interests, as well as the kindness and warmth she was known for.
The money was divided between Killarney First Responders, in recognition of the important emergency support they provide locally and the work they do for people in the community when it matters most, and Tiggys Trust to help support young riders and promote safety in equestrian sport, particularly around cross-country riding safety.
The cheque presentation took place during the students’ graduation ceremony, making the occasion especially emotional and meaningful for the year group ahead of their Leaving Cert exams. Students, teachers and families gathered to mark the end of their school journey together, while also taking time to remember Izzy and the special place she continues to hold within the class.
Speaking at the ceremony, Molly Collins and Molly Reidy spoke beautifully and movingly about the fundraiser and what it meant to the students to honour Izzy’s memory in such a positive and lasting way. Their words reflected the close friendship shared within the year group and the strength and support the students have shown one another throughout the past year.
As the girls now prepare for their Leaving Cert exams, Izzy’s absence is being especially felt among her classmates. The fundraiser became an important way for the students to come together, remember their friend and celebrate the lasting impact she had on so many people.
The initiative received tremendous support from families, staff and the wider Killarney community, with both Killarney First Responders and Tiggy’s Trust expressing their sincere thanks to the students for their generosity, compassion and thoughtfulness.
