THEY say that many hands make light work as farrier Dave Gorey found out before the Horse Sport Ireland mare inspections at JAG EC.

His four Irish Draught mares - two pairs of Dunbeggan Grey Mist full-sisters, all bred in Co Leitrim by Jimmy Fox - achieved Class 1 on Monday. Dave was persuaded by Niamh Grimes to bring out his mares to avail of the current amnesty, as their dams were previously uninspected.

With the turnout and plaiting skills of Niamh and more clients - Liz Freeman, Samantha Fitzsimons and Una Holohan - Dave’s team enjoyed a pre-inspection ‘glow up’.

Dave competes the four mares - Little Star of Lullymore, Tooman Star, Zara’s Image and Zara’s Little Sister - in ploughing matches and has already qualified two for the 2026 All-Ireland championships.

He also drives all four in-hand - another Joe McGrath of the Irish Draught world?
