IN the run-up to Christmas, current and former members of the Shillelagh Hunt Branch of the Irish Pony Club converged on Murphy’s Hotel in Tinahely for the launch of a new book, Shillelagh Pony Club Memories of the Past.
The foreword was written by committee member Sinéad O’Toole and former District Commissioner Brid Kavanagh who commented: “...As we celebrate this special milestone, this book is a tribute to past and present members, their parents, committees and volunteers. Their dedication, hard work, commitment, and love for the sport have allowed Shillelagh Pony Club to thrive and continue to inspire new generations of young riders.
“This book is a gathering of people’s memories and reflections throughout the club’s 60 years. We would like to thank all who contributed articles and photos and our generous sponsors and in particular to the group of members past and present who became our ‘book committee’. They have given generously of their time and efforts to produce this wonderful book.”
The first Branch committee comprised Larry Kinsella (inaugural chairperson and District Commissioner), Johnny Atkinson, Michael Osborne, Peter Sinnott, Thomas Kearney, Michael Walsh, Jim Kerr, Rosemary Kerr and Dr Elizabeth O’Loughlin.
The book was launched by Louie Porter, one of the Branch’s earliest members along with Elsie Kearney who, too, spoke on the night as did another former member Michael O’Toole, the well-known veterinary surgeon and international event rider. From a brief glance at the book, male members were more numerous in the formative years.
The foreword concluded with: “The past 60 years have been filled with wonderful achievements, memories, and milestones. Looking forward to the next 60 – where we continue to grow, learn, and develop, enjoying the love of horses and the friendships and memories we will make along the way. May we continue to gallop towards many more years of success and shared enjoyment.”
