ALL roads led to polo headquarters, the All-Ireland Polo Club, last weekend for the annual Horse Show 6-Goal August Open Tournament, featuring the coveted historic Freebooters Cup, generously sponsored by the Casey family.

The first day of polo saw four teams, including an unusual switch of players when Eamonn Laverty left his beloved Tyrone team to play on the opposing LHK polo team, which turned out to be the right decision when LHK overcame Tyrone in the first round.

Finals day exhibited top-class polo, when LHK came up against the wily Wexford team led by captain Paddy Casey. Fast polo ensued with Ben Sim and Luis Aguirre ably supported by Luca Moore and, of course, Paddy, proving unstoppable against the valiant LHK polo team, with Wexford taking home the beautiful Freebooters Cup and the 6-Goal winner’s title.

History was made in the 0-goal final, when the winners, the Pegus Feeds Polo Team was a three generational, total family affair. The Pegus Team was led by David Stone, his two sons, David Jnr and Mark, and Mark’s son, Max Stone - a memorable day for all.

The next tournament will be held this weekend, August 22nd-23rd, sponsored by Ardbraccan Estate, with Afternoon Tea being served in the club pavilion on Saturday, and light lunches on Sunday. Polo starts 1pm both days. Check social media for details or contact theallirelandpoloclub@gmail.com
