TATTERSALLS Ireland has confirmed the running of the George Mernagh Tattersalls Horse Trials, a one-day event in honour of the late George Mernagh, former Managing Director of Tattersalls Ireland. The long-established fixture, previously held in August, will move to a new date of Sunday, September 13th.
The event will feature a full programme of dressage, show jumping and cross-country across a range of classes, all affiliated to Eventing Ireland. A key addition for 2026 is that the cross-country course will, for the first time, be designed by international course designer Paul Brady. Brady will introduce a more technical track with new fences and additional challenges further enhancing the standard of competition.
The introduction of a six-year-old 110cm class, run for a perpetual trophy in George’s name, will support the development of young horses and provide an important stepping stone for future competition horses, and is expected to attract strong and competitive entries.
Speaking on the announcement, Tattersalls Group Chairman Edmond Mahony said: “George Mernagh was a great friend and an exceptional supporter of equestrian sport. It is a real privilege to see his name associated with this event at Tattersalls Ireland. This event is a fitting tribute to his contribution and passion for the industry, and I know it will be warmly received by all those who knew him.
“I am also delighted to welcome a new committee that brings a wealth of experience and commitment and look forward to supporting them as the event continues to develop.”
Niki Potterton, Chairman of Eventing Ireland, added: “We are delighted to see this long-standing fixture return to a new date in the calendar and named in memory of George Mernagh. The venue is a hugely important part of Irish eventing, and this renewal of the Horse Trials strengthens the sport’s offering for competitors at all levels.”
Course Designer Paul Brady said: “George was a very good friend, and it is an honour to be involved with this event in his memory. I have competed here at Tattersalls Ireland, so I know the venue well from a rider’s perspective, but I am approaching the course design with a very different hat on. It is a fantastic site for competition, and I understand the demands and expectations of riders at all levels. I am looking forward to designing Cross-Country tracks to a high standard that will challenge combinations, while remaining fair for all levels.”
The George Mernagh Memorial Fund Limited (GMMF) was established in memory of the late George Mernagh, former Managing Director of Tattersalls Ireland, to foster youth participation and support the continued development of the equestrian sector. It supports initiatives that reflect George’s lasting contribution to the sport and his commitment to its future.
