THE Garranemore FSC Grand Prix last Friday saw riders and friends descend on the Limerick venue in honour of the late Harriet Penfold.

The event served as a beautiful tribute to Harriet, remembered as a fun, smart, brave and genuinely kind person, who was taken far too young. A moment of silence was observed before the class began, setting a respectful and heartfelt tone for the day. The atmosphere throughout was warm and supportive, with a large turnout of riders showing their solidarity.

In a touching gesture, all competitors wore purple ribbons, lovingly made by the local pony club from Harriet’s hometown, where her mother, Jo Penfold, teaches many young riders.

Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, the class attracted exceptionally high numbers, with Jessica Delaney and Patrick Delaney ensuring the day ran smoothly from start to finish. Behind the scenes, Emma Hassett played a key role in the collecting ring, keeping everything running on time and maintaining a seamless flow to the competition.

Adding a light-hearted moment to the day, Harriet’s beloved dog Bertie made an unexpected appearance, running through the arena just as the jump-off was about to begin. Harriet’s siblings, Oliver Penfold and Zoe Penfold, also competed in the class, making the occasion even more personal and meaningful for the family.

A particularly touching presentation saw Jo gifted a beautiful painting of Harriet by artist Tony O’Connor, commissioned by Harriet’s close friends Rachel Lyons and Gordon Hogan. The arena itself featured a stunning centrepiece fence designed by Harriet’s dear friend, Lisa Bushaway.

Rachel Lyons noted that the generosity and support from sponsors was overwhelming and instrumental in making the day such a success.

Overall, it was a fitting and heartfelt celebration of Harriet’s life, bringing together the community she loved for a day of sport, remembrance and unity.
