WEXFORD’S Bertram Allen rode the 13-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Pacino Amiro (Pacino (BWP) x Carnone Dancing Queen (ISH) by NC Amiro (AES)), bred in Donegal by Simon Scott and owned by Aiden McGrory, into sixth place in the 1.60m Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Rome on Sunday.
From a start list of 40, 10 jumped clear in the first round and proceeded to the jump-off, with five completing double clear rounds.
Allen and his mount had an unlucky fence down in the jump-off, but were the fastest of the four-faulters to slot into sixth place (34.91). The class was won by Harrie Smolders (NED) on Monaco in a time of 34.27, followed by Gilles Thomas (BEL) on Qalista DN in second (34.41) and another Dutch man, Maikel van der Vleuten on Beauville Z NOP in third (34.84).
Denis Lynch is still the best of the Irish in the overall LGCT rankings in 11th place, although he and Chicago picked up four faults in the first round in Rome to finish in 19th place.
