WATERFORD’S Peter Moloney got off the mark for Ireland in the first division of the two-star 1.40m speed class at the two-star fixture at Azelhof, Lier last week, when he rode Nielson into second place of the 55 starters with a clear round in 64.44, only being beaten by Guillaume Foutrier (FRA) on Fruna de Kogis who stopped the clock in 62.85.
There were also 55 starters in the second division of the class, in which Moloney placed ninth with Donna Pascale in a time of 68.60. The win here went to Carmen Edwards (GBR) on Happy Valerie in 63.00.
Friday saw Thomas Ryan and Million’s Grey place seventh in the 72-strong two-star 1.45m jump-off class, when double clear in a jump-off time of 33.18. The winning time of 29.95 came from French rider Gregory Cottard on Cocaine du Val.
The two-star 1.35m speed class on Saturday saw Trevor Breen place seventh with Expenditure, when the pair jumped clear in a time of 70.83. Belgium’s Dimme D’Haese won the class with Next Funky de Muze in 64.03.
Ryan and Sultan de Muze finished eighth in the one-star young horse final seven and eight-year-old 1.35m/1.40m two-phase class, when they were double clear in a phase two time of 35.53. Kendra Claricia Brinkop (GER) was the clear winner here, when stopping the clock in a fast time of 26.08.
Breen and Expenditure secured another top-10 placing on Sunday, when they jumped into 10th place in the two-star 1.35m two-phase special class when double clear in 31.94. Incredibly, D’Haese (BEL) claimed joint first place in the class with two mounts - Next Funky de Muze and Baccarat du Tertre - remarkably both clocking the same time of 29.87.
The one-star 1.30m Grand Prix saw Niamh Hanley ride Frozen Pleasure Z into eighth place. Of the 43 starters in the class, only five jumped clear within the allocated time to make it into the timed decider. Hanley was among those who incurred time penalties in the first round and didn’t get the chance to jump again. Only three combinations completed double clear rounds, with time deciding their positions on the podium - first place went to Louis Mahieu (BEL) on Et Toc de Hus (30.57), just ahead of Harry Wainwright (GBR) on Pinheiro Beech (30.93) in second, followed by Valentine Auguin (FRA) on Dandy de La Rose in third (35.73).
The two-star 1.45m Grand Prix saw 57 combinations go to post, 10 of whom jumped clear in the first round for a chance to jump again, with seven remaining clear second time out. Moloney was among them, riding Nielson to a double clear in a jump-off time of 43.04. Belgian winner Christophe Vanderhasselt on Axxess Pur Z stopped the clock in an unbeatable 40.45.
