GREENISLAND’s Amelia Logan fared best of the young Irish riders competing in the showing section of last week’s Agria Royal International Horse Show in Hickstead.

Last Saturday, Logan topped the final line-up in the BSPS first ridden hunter pony type championship with her mother Ruth’s Garnagree Golden Bravado on whom, having claimed various titles en route, she won the mini novice champion of champions’ award at the Northern Ireland Festival in Cavan and the combined first ridden class at Balmoral.

The 10-year-old Welsh Section B gelding by Goldengrove Bravado, who was previously campaigned by Lauren O’Rourke, was bred by Carol Power. As the show opened on the Tuesday, Logan finished third in the BSPA plaited small ridden pony championship with the 13-year-old British-bred piebald gelding Fielden Real McCoy.

The following day, Casey-Lee Millar placed sixth in the 133cm show hunter pony championship on her mother Eileen’s eight-year-old Irish Sport Pony gelding Out Of The West. At next week’s Gallagher Dublin Horse Show, Millar and the Lehid Canal Prince grey are among the entries for the 133cm show hunter pony class, which they won last August.

Also heading to the Ballsbridge showgrounds, where they won their class 12 months ago and in 2024, is Co Kildare’s Sadhbh O’Connor who, on Saturday, finished fifth in the BSPS Intermediate show hunter championship with her mother Aoife’s ISH gelding Griffinstown, a seven-year-old bay son of Imperial Tiger.

This class, and the show’s small hunter championship, were won by Britain’s Alice Homer on the 10-year-old Super Premium gelding Tidy Town, one of numerous Irish-bred winners over the six days. When competing at home in Ireland, Amira Curran is coached by O’Connor but, on Sunday, she placed fourth in the 148cm show pony class on her father Daryl’s British-bred Shildons Royal Affair, a 10-year-old Tiger Attack gelding, who is produced in England by Team Ahern.

Cian Greene, who won the Under 10s’ combined training championship at the Irish Pony Club’s Festival in Barnadown just days earlier on Captain Casper, made his Hickstead debut last Sunday when he placed third in the BSPS working hunter pony nursery stakes with his mother Jamie’s 18-year-old 128cm show jumping pony mare Killiskey Magic.
