IT was a great result for the Irish with two podium placings in the 59-strong three-star 1.50m Grand Prix at Vejer de la Frontera in Spain on Sunday.

Monaghan’s Clem McMahon rode Carneyhaugh Unison, an eight-year-old Irish Sport Horse mare bred by Patrick Breen, into second place when double clear in a jump-off time of 37.44 seconds. Meath’s Cian O’Connor finished close behind on Canbella Blue PS in third in 37.61. The Irish pair were only beaten by Portugal’s Rodrigo Giesteira Almeida on Karonia.L in 37.13.

Top five

Week one of the Andalucia October Tour was held last week, with a number of Irish competitors taking the opportunity to compete.

Isabel O’Brien and James Derwin were among the joint winners of the one-star 1.15m five-year-old class, riding HHS Bambi and Mr Priority respectively.

The day’s three-star 1.30m two-phase special saw Dermott Lennon place fifth with Lucardo,with a double clear in 38.89.

Friday’s one-star 1.15m five-year-old class saw Derwin finish fourth on Mr Priority.

The three-star 1.20m Accumulator saw Aine Shortall in fourth with Killerisk Can Ya, followed by Gerard Campbell on Coldplay I in fifth. Campbell then placed third with Livio in the three-star 1.10m speed class.

Saturday started with a three-star 1.35m class, in which Derwin and Amos L Z placed fifth.

Campbell and Livio finished fifth in the 1.20m two-phase special, while Shortall and Killerisk Can Ya finished on the podium in third in the day’s three-star 1.30m class.

Shortall and Killerisk Can Ya placed fourth in Sunday’s three-star 1.25m speed class. The concluding three-star 1.10m speed class saw Alannah Grieve on Royale-K van’t Kattenheye finish in fifth place.
