IRISH riders gave a good account of themselves internationally over the weekend, bringing home ribbons from around Europe and the USA.

The four-star show in Münster, Germany wasn’t too far to travel for Mayo’s Ciaran Nallon, who is based at Beerbaum Stables in Germany. Nallon rode Christians Carado into third place in the four-star Brinkhoff Brewery 1.50m speed class. From a start list of 27, 13 jumped clear, with Nallon being among the fastest of these, stopping the clock in 69.14 seconds. It was a German one-two, when Hans Thorben Rüder rode Singu into first place (67.00) and Marcus Ehning took second riding Stargold (68.28).

Azelhof

There were a number of podium places for Irish riders at the three-star fixture at Azelhof Horse Events at Lier, Belgium, including a second-place finish for Daniel McAlinden (Philly Fogerty) and a third for Darragh Kenny (Nondon Mtt) in Thursday’s opening 1.40m speed class.

Friday’s 1.50m Longines Rankings jump-off class saw Kilkenny’s Ivan Dalton place third with the nine-year-old stallion Floris RZ. There was a large start list of 80, 16 of whom booked a place in the jump-off, producing eight double clears. Dalton’s fault-free effort in 37.03 secured him a podium place, behind a French one-two of Julien Epaillard on Le Coultre de Muze (34.89) and Mathieu Billot on Villas Z (35.63) respectively.

Conan Wright then showed his class, riding Le Grande into second place in the 25-strong 1.40m two-phase class, keeping the poles intact in 26.16. Sean Monaghan followed up with a runner-up finish in Saturday’s 1.40m speed and handiness class with Roger de Mariposa.

Wright was among just five to jump double clear in the 59-strong 1.50m Grand Prix on Sunday riding Mr Cornet de Regor to take fifth place.

USA

Across the Atlantic, at the Douglas Elliman GP Stadium at Saugerties, New York, the three-star HITS Hudson Valley series continued and Derry native Christian Coyle rode his own 13-year-old gelding Chicago CM into the runner-up berth in the $31,020 FEI Jumper Classic on Wednesday.

There were 34 starters in the class, with 19 of them managing to finish without fault. Coyle’s jump-off time of 30.73 was just off the mark of winner JJ Torano (USA) on Dora Du Valon, who clocked 29.12 for the win.

Meanwhile, at Traverse City, Paul O’Shea and Spy just missed out on the win in the 1.45m Silver Oak speed class, when their time of 61.48 was just pipped by Karl Cook (USA) on Foxy de la Roque (61.37), with O’Shea settling for second place.

O’Shea then rode Manglar LS La Silla into third place in Friday’s 1.45m Silver Oak Welcome Jumper class. The 26 starters resulted in eight clear first rounds, with five completing double clear. O’Shea’s time of 36.11 secured him a podium place, with Ali Wolff (USA) on Hesperide Du Breuil taking the win in 35.10. O’Shea and Manglar LS La Silla then placed 10th in the Agero Grand Prix on Sunday.
