SHANE Breen was certainly on form over the weekend, when taking a number of placings at Wiesbaden in Germany, but the highlight was a win in the four-star Medium Tour 1.45m speed class on board BP Arctic Blue.
Breen and the nine-year-old gelding jumped clear in a lightening-fast time of 65.70 seconds – almost three and half seconds ahead of his nearest rival, Germany’s Denis Neilsen, who rode Cosmo von Imhoff clear in 69.19 to take second place.
The four-star show was held at Wiesbaden in Germany from June 6th until 9th and incorporated both dressage and show jumping classes. Shane Breen rode J-Star into third place in Saturday’s four-star Small Tour 1.40m class, clocking a time of 67.24. It was a home win for the multi-talented Michael Jung (GER) on Qwatt, who stopped the clock in 65.82, with Karen Boos Pegler (BOL) on Baladay Z runners-up in 65.92.
Breen then placed fifth in the day’s four-star Big Tour 1.50m Longines Ranking class on board the 11-year-old gelding Cato Boy, when they jumped clear in a time of 67.25. The class win went to Egypt’s Karim Elzoghby on Zandigo (65.15).
Sunday saw Breen back in the top five again with a fifth-place finish on board J-Star in the four-star Small Tour 1.40m speed and handiness class, clocking 56.80 seconds. The winning round was ridden by Italy’s Andrea Marchese on Menzo de Toxandria in a time of 54.34.
Ireland’s Stephan Dubsky finished on the podium with Cestuy la de l’Esques in Monday’s four-star Small Tour 1.45m two-phase class, when they placed third in a time of 33.24. Kellie Allen rode Extasy into ninth place, having incurred four faults in the second phase in 37.09.
The Longines 1.60m Grand Prix of Wiesbaden concluded the show on Monday and saw Breen place eighth with Cato Boy, after four faults in round one meant they did not proceed to the jump-off. Only five of the 28 starters secured their chance to jump again, with three double clears deserving of the podium places. The win here went to Italy’s Elia Simonetti on Li la Bo, with a double clear in a jump-off time of 37.47 seconds.
