ISAAC McCarthy not only tops the Baileys Horse Feeds flexi eventing series with Suirvalley Little Monkey, but his points-scoring exploits at The Meadows last Saturday saw the Dromore High School pupil also extend his lead in the Plusvital combined training spring series CT90 league.
Following four weeks of competition in this code, McCarthy and Dawn Carlisle’s 19-year-old bay gelding have amassed 24 points, which leave them four clear of Maya Byrne with Tranquil Master and Lucy Ferris with How Ya Sammy who, having finished first and second respectively at Milchem on Sunday, are tied on 20 points apiece.
McCarthy’s grandfather Denis Currie is some way off the pace in the Baileys’ series but, thanks to his win in the combined training section at The Meadows on Saturday, he now leads the Plusvital CT110 league with his 16-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Merlot (13.5 points), a chesnut son of Lancelot. Having had a costly fence down show jumping, fellow Northern Region member Ciarraí Rice lies second with Lady J (12) while, having taken the weekend off from combined training, Michael O’Toole has dropped to third with Obsession AKA Ballybeg Obsession (11.5).
It’s very close at the top of the CT100 league, where Milchem-based Scottish international event rider Becky Scott leads the way on 18.5 points with her own ISH mare RDM Ring Of The Night (Vivant Van Heffinck - Night Fly, by Maltstriker). Grace Mahon, who landed Sunday’s latest round at Milchem, lies in second place with Regina Hoctor’s seven-year-old ISH mare Ballycondon OBOS (16 points), ahead of the Northern Region’s Bernie Muirhead and her nine-year-old grey gelding Out Of The Blue (15).
While she, like the aforementioned O’Toole, didn’t compete in the series last weekend, Carlow Pony Club member Emily Flavin Redmond still maintains her lead in the CT80 league. However, on 18.5, she and her mother Debbie’s five-year-old Connemara mare Galtee Honeysuckle (Kinvara Boy - Mona Incha Sunshine Lady, by I Love You Melody) have just half a point to spare over their nearest rivals.
Sarah Cowan occupies second spot with another Connemara, Patrick Heskin’s seven-year-old gelding Gleann Rua Storm while another senior rider, Milchem-based Duncan McFadyen, is in third place with Hollypark Daisy (14).
As there were no CT115 classes last weekend, Louise Bloomer remains in a clear lead with Martin Coen’s 11-year-old ISH gelding Atlantic Rockstar (13 points).
Grace Mahon has extended her lead over Charlie Watson as they vie for points as the leading Junior rider, while Bernie Muirhead and Kaiti McCann are tied in the race to be the leading amateur rider of the series.
